KITOWA × LEXUS—Fragrance as the Memory of Space

KITOWA LEXUS 香りがつなぐ、空間の記憶

Each year, LEXUS unveils an installation at Milan Design Week. In 2026, the exhibition centered on the brand's new flagship, the LEXUS LS Concept, inviting visitors to reconsider what it means to inhabit space—and how that space could make them feel.

But what remains when the experience is over? Fragrance, we believe, can carry a trace of it into daily life—without ever asserting itself.

As visitors encountered this year's installation, impressions took shape: a feeling, a memory in the making. In response, KITOWA created a special incense, offering visitors a way to let the experience linger beyond the exhibition and into everyday life.

Incense was the natural choice to embody the spirit of an installation built around space itself. For centuries, it has been used in Japan to shape the atmosphere of a room and bring stillness to the mind.

Each stick of KITOWA incense is made from natural aromatics and finished by hand,
one at a time, by skilled artisans at our workshop in Japan.

For this collaboration, we turned to hinoki. Crafted from natural hinoki oil sourced in
Mie Prefecture, the fragrance captures the distinctive clarity and serenity of this native Japanese wood.

The fragrance is designed to awaken the installation's memory—to let its atmosphere return, unannounced, in an unguarded moment, long after the exhibition has passed.

The memory of the exhibition arrives inside tatō, a traditional Japanese form of paper wrapping. There is a certain grace to opening it—the unfolding of the paper, the first trace of fragrance rising into the air, the words waiting within. A poem printed on the tatō offers a second expression of the exhibition's theme. As fragrance and words come together, the experience becomes something more intimate—something personal, something remembered.

From the moment it is held, the tatō is designed to bring the exhibition's echo back to life.

We've released a short film capturing the story and spirit behind this project.

From the making of the hinoki fragrance to the hands of the artisans who shaped it,
every detail reveals craftsmanship rooted in Japan's centuries-old fragrance heritage—
the same aesthetic carried through every LEXUS creation.
The film offers a deeper sense of the installation—not only the space itself, but the
sensations and memories that linger long after leaving it.
