OUR PHILOSOPHY

Tradition is not something we preserve unchanged.
It is something we carry forward.

KITOWA was born in 2018 from a lineage of Japanese
incense-making that dates back to 1575.

Nearly 450 years of knowledge and sensibility lie behind
what we create today, connecting us to a culture of scent
that has evolved in Japan across generations.

But heritage is only our beginning.

We look to the past to create what comes next,
translating a distinctly Japanese sensitivity to scent,
beauty and the senses into fragrance for today.

Through each creation, we bring a new expression of
Japanese fragrance to the world.

A JAPANESE SENSE OF LUXURY

Luxury does not need to announce itself.

For KITOWA, beauty lies in restraint, stillness and subtlety
—a sensibility deeply rooted in Japanese culture.

Our fragrances embody this belief. Rather than
commanding attention, they become part of their
surroundings, bringing a sense of richness to everyday
life.

This is luxury turned inward—something experienced
rather than displayed.

It is a quieter, more personal expression of beauty, and
one that KITOWA believes can define luxury for a new
era.

THE ART OF SCENT

The Essence of Japan, Reimagined

Hinoki, hiba and kusunoki have shaped the
atmosphere of Japanese spaces for centuries, from
traditional architecture to the home. Their presence
brings a sense of clarity and calm that has become
deeply woven into Japanese life.

At KITOWA, we use these precious natural aromatics
generously, allowing the distinctive character of each
wood to become an integral part of the fragrance
itself.

HINOKI

Hinoki is prized for its rich fragrance and is renowned as one of Japan’s finest building materials. It has long been used at Ise Jingu in Mie Prefecture, including for Shikinen Sengu, the major ceremonial rebuilding of the shrine carried out once every 20 years. Characterized by its clear, beautifully refined grain, hinoki has in recent years also gained recognition as a fragrance ingredient in Europe and the United States, bringing the name “HINOKI” to an increasingly global audience.

HIBA

Hiba is a conifer native to Japan and is said to possess qualities that promote relaxation and help ease stress. Like hinoki, it is highly durable, and Aomori hiba was used as a building material at Chusonji Temple in Hiraizumi, which has a history spanning some 1,000 years. Known for its warm, distinctive fragrance, Aomori hiba is associated with one of Japan’s three most celebrated forests, alongside Kiso hinoki and Akita sugi.

KUSUNOKI

Kusunoki can grow into an immense tree exceeding 30 meters in height and is known in Japan as a symbol of sacred trees. Its fragrance has a fresh, cooling character befitting a tree native to warmer regions. Camphor, a crystalline aromatic substance obtained from kusunoki, is particularly renowned for its high quality when produced in Kagoshima Prefecture. One theory holds that the name kusunoki derives from its traditional association with medicinal uses, including pain relief and insect-repellent properties.

The woods are only the beginning.

In the hands of experienced perfumers, their natural
essences are composed with rare aromatics from around
the world, guided by precision, sensitivity and a deep
respect for the materials themselves.

The result is a distinctly Japanese approach to perfumery
—subtle in its presence, yet rich in depth and character.
It reflects a sensibility shaped by an intimate relationship
with nature and an appreciation for beauty that never
needs to overwhelm.

This is how KITOWA continues to explore new
possibilities in fragrance, creating scents unlike any
other.

SPATIAL AESTHETICS

Scent That Shapes the Way We Experience Space

Scent is more than something we wear. It can change the
way a space feels, the way a moment unfolds, and even
the way we feel within it.

KITOWA brings this idea into everyday life through
personal fragrance, scents for the home and bath rituals.
Each is created to engage the senses and bring a sense
of calm and depth to the everyday.

Through scent, we seek to create not simply fragrance,
but a richer experience of the spaces we inhabit.

KITOWA ICONS

Each KITOWA creation gives form to a distinctly
Japanese sense of beauty through scent.
Thoughtfully composed in harmony with nature,
each one brings its own character to the rituals and
spaces of everyday life.
